Asian Surfing Championships 2025: Mahabalipuram hosts final Asian Games qualifier – India squad, where to watch live
India’s No. 1 surfer Kishore Kumar and national champion Kamali Moorthy will lead a 12-member Indian squad at Mahabalipuram. Watch live stream!
The Asian Surfing Championships 2025 will be held on the beaches of Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu, India, from Sunday.
The fourth edition of the Asian Surfing Championships will be available to watch on live streaming in India.
India are hosting the continental surfing showpiece for the first time. The Mahabalipuram meet will also serve as the final surfing qualifiers for the 2026 Asian Games in Japan.
At last year’s Asian Surfing Championships in the Maldives, India won a silver medal at the Maruhaba Cup, a team event, and secured a quota for the upcoming Asian Games.
Both the Indian men’s and women’s surfing teams will compete in Japan next year, where surfing will be making its Asian Games debut.
Last year in the Maldives, Harish Muthu became the first Indian to reach the men’s open quarter-finals at the Asian Championships while teenage prodigy Kishore Kumar stormed into the under-18 semi-finals.
Kishore Kumar, now India’s No. 1 men’s surfer, will lead the contingent in Mahabalipuram this year. Harish Muthu missed out.
India will field a 12-member squad for the Asian Surfing Championships 2025. They will compete across four categories – men’s open, women’s open, men’s under-18, and women’s under-18.
Reigning women’s senior national champion Kamali Moorthy is also in the fray.
India’s squad for Asian Surfing Championships 2025
- Men’s open: Srikanth D, Kishore Kumar, Ramesh Budihal
- Women’s open: Kamali Moorthy, Shrishti Selvam, Sugar Shanti Banarse
- Men’s under-18: Tayin Arun, Harish P, Prahlad Sriram
- Women’s under-18: Aadya Singh, Dhamayanthi Sriram, Saanvi Hegde
Over 150 surfers from 20 countries will compete in Mahabalipuram.
Afghanistan, Bangladesh, People’s Republic of China, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Kuwait, Lebanon, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, UAE and Uzbekistan are the other participating countries, barring the hosts.
The event will mirror international surfing formats, starting with seeding rounds where the top two from each heat progress directly to the main draw, while the rest get another shot through repechage heats.
Action will then move through quarter-finals, semi-finals and culminate in a four-surfer final. The men’s and women’s champions will also earn direct entry to the SurfCity El Salvador ALAS Global Finals in November.
Surfing made its Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020 with two medal events – men’s shortboard and women’s shortboard. The same events were part of the Paris 2024 Olympics as well.
