Makai Surf Foundation
Surfing can begin as a lesson, but time in the ocean can offer much more than learning how to ride a wave.
Makai Surf Foundation is an initiative developed in collaboration with Surfing Swami Foundation, bringing together a shared belief in making surfing more accessible and keeping that connection to the ocean meaningful.
The work centres on creating opportunities for young people to spend time in the water, encouraging responsibility towards the coastline, and supporting young surfers as they continue to learn and progress.
- 01 Access to surfing
- 02 Care for the coastline
- 03 Support for young surfers
More people in the water. More reason to care for it.
The work is simple in principle: create opportunities to experience surfing, encourage a stronger relationship with the ocean, and support young surfers who want to keep going.
Opening the water to more people.
Not everyone grows up with an easy way into surfing. Through the work carried out with Surfing Swami Foundation, Makai supports opportunities for children and young people to experience the ocean through free surf lessons, workshops and outreach programmes.
The idea is not only to teach someone how to stand on a board. Time in the water can build confidence, patience and discipline, while creating a much more personal connection with the coastline.
Beach cleanups, ocean-awareness activities and community days are part of the same approach: enjoying the ocean also means learning to look after the places that make surfing possible.
Supporting the next generation.
For young surfers who show the ability and commitment to progress further, access to consistent support can make a real difference.
Makai Surf Foundation's work includes helping promising surfers through mentorship, training support and potential sponsorship opportunities, while encouraging steady, long-term development in the sport.
As competitive surfing continues to grow in India, that can also mean helping young surfers prepare for opportunities beyond their local breaks, including national and international competition pathways.
