Our Story
Makai Surf Adventure grew from a long relationship with surfing and a simple idea: help more people learn it well, while staying connected to the ocean and the places where that learning happens.
Kiran Kumar, one of the early surfers in India, sits at the heart of that story. His experience in Indian surfing, and his role in helping the sport grow across coastal communities, shaped much of the thinking behind Makai.
What followed was a surf and adventure business built around teaching, time in the water and making surfing more approachable. Today, Makai brings that approach to its surf lessons and experiences in Goa, without losing sight of the people and coastline that make them possible.
Built in the water, shaped by the coast.
Makai grew alongside a changing surf culture in India, but the idea behind it has stayed fairly simple: teach people properly, take the ocean seriously and stay connected to the places where we surf.
For Makai, surfing has always been something learned through time, repetition and a better understanding of the ocean.
As more people became curious about surfing in India, the need was not simply for someone to hand them a board and push them into a wave. They needed space to learn at their own pace, understand the water and build confidence gradually.
That thinking became part of Makai from the beginning. The aim has been to make surfing approachable without stripping away the patience and respect that learning it properly requires.
The place matters too.
Surfing does not happen separately from the coastline around it. The beaches, local communities and character of each place are part of the experience.
Makai's journey has therefore also been about learning how to operate with respect for those surroundings, rather than treating the coast as nothing more than a backdrop for an activity.
Surfing is only part of it.
A good surf experience is not just about whether you managed to stand up on a board.
It is also about feeling more comfortable in the water, understanding a little more about the ocean and leaving with enough confidence to keep learning.
That is the kind of experience Makai wants to create: thoughtful instruction, sensible preparation and a genuine respect for the coastline and communities that make surfing here possible.
Teach it properly.
Good instruction means giving people the foundations, feedback and time they need to understand what they are doing, not simply getting them through a single session.
Take safety seriously.
Surfing should feel exciting, but learning around the ocean also requires awareness, preparation and respect for changing conditions.
Respect where you surf.
The coast is home to people, traditions and communities that were here long before surfing became an experience people travelled for. That deserves to be recognised.
Leave the ocean better understood.
Spending time in the water naturally changes the way people look at it. Makai encourages that awareness, along with responsible behaviour on the beach and in the ocean.
